About Disney BDX Droids

Disney's BDX Droids are small, two-legged robotic characters designed to bring the personality of Star Wars droids into real-world encounters. Developed by Disney Research and Walt Disney Imagineering, they combine expressive body language with dynamic walking and balance control.

Reinforcement learning trains movement controllers in simulation. An animation engine blends artist-designed motions, while a human operator directs performances and adds the timing and reactions that make each character engaging. Disney describes the deployed characters as puppeteered: learned balance and locomotion do not mean every interaction is autonomous.

The platform has appeared at Disney parks, events and demonstrations. Disney published its technical research, Design and Control of a Bipedal Robotic Character, in July 2024. This is an entertainment and research platform, with no publicly listed retail price.
